In Praise of Sardines

My history of fish and fish oil is a little silly.

I learn about the incredible benefits of the fish, buy a fish product, and then let it sit on the shelf for a few months before I finally take it.

I did this with cod liver oil several years ago.  My wife and I knew about the heart-healthy, triglyceride-lowering, brain-nourishing benefits, but hadn’t actually gotten around to consuming any.  We bought Carlson’s lemon flavored cod liver oil, and let it sit.  Then, one day we just tried it, and it tasted like lemon oil – not fishy at all.

Since then, fish oil has gone on to be one of my favorite supplements, and I recommend it to everyone. These days, I’m taking Nordic Naturals Arctic D Cod Liver Oil, as are my wife and son.

So, last year I was reading Dr. Jonny Bowden’s 100 Healthiest Foods on Earth.  One of those healthy foods was sardines.  Once again, I loved what I read, went out and bought some Crown Prince Natural Skinless and Boneless Sardines in Olive Oil.  And there it has been sitting ever since.

Fast forward to last week.

I went to Dallas to join Nordic Naturals in taping some episodes of Know the Cause with Doug Kaufmann.  My two buddies, Stuart Tomc and Todd Scarborough were there from Nordic, and they’re both great guys.

Well, on Friday morning, Stuart called me at 7:45 a.m. and said, “You gotta come to my room for breakfast.  I’ve got everything laid out already.”

Stuart is as much of a health freak as I am, so I trusted his selections.  I went to his room, and here’s the scene:  The door to the balcony is open, with a nice Spring-like breeze blowing through.  Two place settings on the table, complete with coffee, strawberries and blueberries, two Granny Smith apples, and two cans of Crown Prince sardines.

I told Stu that I had wanted to try some sardines, but just hadn’t taken the plunge yet.  He told me that he eats sardines every single day for breakfast, along with berries or an apple.  If you’ve never seen Stu on Doug’s TV show, I can tell you that he’s the picture of health.  No body fat on him at all; energetic; brilliant with the health stuff; well-respected.  He’s the quintessential health nut for the 21st-century.

So, with the breeze blowing through and his ubiquitous 80’s music playing in the background, we had our sardine breakfast, and it was sensational.

A can of these Crown Prince sardines has 26 grams of protein, 12 grams of fantastically healthy fat, 2 grams of which are omega-3 fatty acids, and zero carbs.  Throw in some berries, and you have one of the healthiest meals ever. 

It’s no wonder that Stuart loves this kind of meal. Most of our conversations center around health, and half of those are around fish oil and omega-3 fatty acids.  He goes WAY beyond talking about how healthy they are, and delves into the microscopic and molecular work of fishy fatty acids.  Suffice it to say, they’re must-have for great health.

So, in addition to my daily Nordic Naturals Arctic –D Cod Liver Oil, I now have the Crown Prince Sardines.  I can take them with me on the road or around town, or I can have them at home, letting the cat lick up the leftovers in the can.  Between these two products, and along with the extra virgin coconut oil I throw in my smoothies, I’m confident that I’m getting the right fats for terrific health.
