What I'm Trying: ZenBev

Sleep.

Tough for a lot of people.  Used to be tough for me, with all the insomnia mixed in with the restless leg I used to have.

Then I found Doug Kaufmann, followed his antifungal approach to health, and haven’t looked back.  But, as a someone who is assigned to review and comment on supplements, I still try everything I can get my hands on. 

I’ve tried a lot of sleep formulas, (not to mention Ambien and the like back in the day).  I’ve been happy with a lot of the natural products, but I was never able to handle the “hangover effect” of the prescription drugs.

ZenBev was a surprise, though.  On paper, it shouldn’t work.  It doesn’t look like there’s enough “stuff” in it.  I almost didn’t try it, but I had the ZenBev folks on my radio show, SuperHealth, and I needed to give it a go.  I’m so glad I did.

THE STORY OF L-TRYPTOPHAN

We know that L-Tryptophan is the sleep amino acid.  Years and years ago, you could get it for about five bucks a bottle.  Not only could you get a healthy, sound, inexpensive sleep out of it, you’d also get the extra benefit of it helping to raise natural serotonin in the brain.  Serotonin is the hormone they’re trying to raise when you’re given antidepressants, such as Prozac, Paxil, and Zoloft.  But with L-Tryptophan, it came without those pesky side effects.

Speaking of Prozac, just about the time Prozac was being approved for sale in the U.S., a strange thing happened.  A suspicious, contaminated batch of L-Tryptophan arrived to the U.S. from overseas.  It was discovered quickly and taken out of the marketplace.  But instead of regulators attributing this to the contaminant itself, (like they did when Tylenol was contaminated with cyanide), they instead blamed this on the actual L-Tryptophan.   They scared people into thinking L-Tryptophan was dangerous, instead of just pointing out that Tryptophan is a harmless amino acid found in protein foods, like turkey and chicken.  It was the contaminant that was dangerous, not the amino acid.  

Nevertheless, the damage was done and L-Tryptophan was banned from sale.  Some people have pointed out that the ban on the sale of Tryptophan lasted just about as long as the patent on Prozac.  I have no idea if this is just a coincidence or not, but it’s an interesting little tidbit to debate about.

When it did come back on the market, it wasn’t five bucks anymore.  It was closer to 50 bucks!  I still love it, and take it with vitamin B-6 from time to time.  But it’s an expensive way to sleep.

ZenBev COMES ALONG

ZenBev isn’t just L-Tryptophan in a bottle.  It’s a powder that contains a naturally occurring source of this amino acid – pumpkin seeds!   Putting the pumpkin seeds into the mix instead of just the L-Tryptophan does something remarkable:  It helps the L-Tryptophan absorb so much better, and that means you don’t have to take nearly as much as you would if you were just taking it as a single amino acid.

Plus, the creator of ZenBev added a few other things to help it absorb even more.  The story is remarkable, and it’s featured in a book he wrote.  I’ll leave it to him to explain, but suffice it to say, he put a biochemical puzzle together, and the effect is outstanding.

HOW I TAKE IT

It’s simple.

ZenBev is a great tasting powder that I mix with water and take on an empty stomach, and then just relax. 

The first time I took it, I noticed the effect in about 30 minutes.  Just a gentle, relaxing “nudge”, that made me ready to get some ZZZzzz’s.  Nothing harsh.  It felt like you’d had a full day, gave everything you could, and now you’re ready to just drift off.  Some people tell me that they had a similar effect, but that it took a few nights before they began to feel it.  But once it did start working, they had no complaints.

As for the next morning?  ZERO “hangover” effect like you have with so many prescription sleep products.  ZERO side effects of any kind.  Just a feeling of being fully rested, fully alert, and ready to roll.

There’s a whole “sleep system” package, that includes the ZenBev, a sleep mask, (that my cat destroyed after the first week), and some ear plugs, (that my son thought would be fun to put down a street drain).  I have almost no experience with those since my family/animals have had their way with them, but I’m sure they’re a fine addition to the powder, itself.

If you’re having sleep difficulties, you might want to investigate ZenBev.  And give it several nights.  This isn’t a drug that hammers your physiology into submission.  This is food, and it works with your body, not against it.  For those of you who care about this kind of thing, the book is pretty interesting, too.  But if you’re just interested in getting some healthy sleep with zero side effects, I’d give ZenBev a try.
