Things We Like - Sinus Flushing

For me, colds were always followed by sinus infections, but not anymore.....

It used to drive me batty, but anytime I ever had any type of upper respiratory type of virus, I would inevitably get a sinus infection.  Years ago, I'd let it linger on forever, driving me out of my mind until I'd finally break down and go to the doctor.  He'd of course prescribe antibiotics, which I would take, and the sinus infection would eventually go away after another week or so.  I never really knew if the antibiotics cured the infection or it simply went away on it's own, but that's a topic for another time.

Since then I've become quite aware of the dangers of taking antibiotics, and tried to avoid them at all costs.  But I'd still get sinus infections, and eventually break down and get on antibiotics again.

Finally, I heard about something called 'sinus flushing'.  Basically, you run body temperature salty water up one nostril, and out the other.  Then you repeat for the other side.  Sound gross?  Just wait.....

At first I was quite apprehensive about all this, as anytime I've ever got water up my nose (by swimming usually), it was normally associated with a near drowning experience!  Definitely not something I want to repeat very often for sure.  However, I was assured that as long as you closed off your upper throat and breathed out of your mouth, that this didn't happen.

So once again in my sinus misery, I made my way down to the health food store.  The first product I saw was called a 'Neti Pot', which is simply looks exactly like a tiny tea pot.  To me, this looked very awkward to use (and silly too).  However, right next to this product was a product called the 'Nasaline Nasal Rinsing System'.  This was much more to my liking, as it consisted of a giant syringe with a rubber stopper at the end.  You simply fill the syringe with saline solution, hold it up against one nostril, and slowly push.  I'm sure that the Neti Pot would have worked just fine as well, but the Nasaline system was simply more to my liking.

I left the health food store armed with my new Nasaline system, with some pure salt.  I mixed it per the package instructions, held it up to one nostril, breathed through my mouth, and slowly pushed.

Ewwwwwww.  Have you ever knocked over a bottle of rubber cement?  Well, have you ever had an entire bottle of rubber cement come pouring out of your nose? You get the idea!

It does feel a bit odd to fill your sinuses with saline, and it makes your eyes water a bit, but you can't believe what comes out of your head with one of these systems!  The first time I did it, I repeated with each nostril until I used up the entire solution.  For about an hour after, my head felt a bit funny, but the reduction in head pressure was amazing.  Nothing I've ever tried comes even close.

Skip ahead to today.  If I happen to feel something funny in the sinuses, I immediately reach for my Nasaline system.  Unlike the instructions, I mix up about 12 ounces of saline solution, and I add 5 to 10 drops of Nutribiotic GSE (Grapefruit Seed Extract) liquid.  GSE is antibiotic and anti-fungal, and in this concentration it is perfect for squirting up your nose to help kill off any bad guys that may be living there.  GSE does make your 'smeller' act funny for about an hour, but it's well worth it.

If it's a particularly bad situation, I may flush in this fashion twice a day at first, then once a day after.  Usually in 4 or 5 days the problem is nearly gone.

So next time you come down with a sinus infection, you might want to give this system a shot.
